The African Development Bank (AfDB), together with the Rockefeller Foundation, Microsoft and Facebook has launched the Coding for Employment (CfE) program which aims to prepare African youth for the future jobs by providing them with a demand-driven Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills alongside entrepreneurship and employability training. The JA Africa consortium (which includes JA Africa, JA Kenya and Simplon) has been selected as the Program Implementation Unit that will coordinate activities in Kenya.

This is in line with the Bank's Jobs for Youth in Africa (JfYA) strategy (2016-2025) which targets that by 2025, the Job for Youths in Africa Initiative will equip more than 50 million African youth with employable skills and create 25 million jobs in agriculture, ICTs and other related industries.

Components of the CfE Program in Kenya

- Establishment of Centers of Excellence at partner universities in Kenya.

- Training of 2100 youth in ICT skills.

- Facilitation of job linkages through employability and entrepreneurship training and workplace exposure.

• Build Your Business

Program graduates will receive a globally-recognized Microsoft certificate. The ICT training will also be complemented by training in entrepreneurship and critical life skills to prepare trainees for the workplace or managing their own business.

The Advanced level program (SOFTWARE DEVELOPER) aims to train learners to perform the technical implementation and development of a website. The ICT training will be complemented by entrepreneurship and critical life skills training for success in the workplace or managing a business.

Location: Blended (Program will start off with virtual classes held via Microsoft Teams & Simplonline and subsequently switch to in-person classes when COVID 19 restrictions are lifted)

Duration: 6 months (8:30am - 4:30pm, Mondays-Fridays)

Apply to become a Technical Instructor/Trainer to deliver intermediate and advanced ICT training tp young Kenyans as part of AfDB's Coding for Employment program.


- Passionate about IT programming with expert knowledge of Internet languages (front end and back end)

- Expert knowledge of the principles of versioning under Git.

- Comfortable with the Linux/Unix system, professional social networks, one or more project management tools, referencing issues, etc.

- A good grasp of English to update your knowledge in your area of expertise.

- Knowledge of agile and UX methodologies.

- Expert knowledge of database management and administration (SQL and/or potentially NoSQL)

PRE-REQUISITE: Must be Kenya-based. Preference will be given to applicants resident in Nairobi.

For the initial 1-2months, training will be delivered virtually. It will subsequently shift to blended or on-site delivery once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted. Selected applicants will join a dedicated team whose objectives will be:

- To train students in "web development" skills over a period of three 10-week cycles (intermediate level) or one 7 months cycle (advanced level).

- To support students in prospecting for job opportunities.

- To share your own skills and perspectives with students as well as peer trainers.
