Who We Are

As one of the world’s largest youth-serving NGOs, JA Worldwide activates youth for the future of jobs.

Through the delivery of hands-on, blended learning in financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship, we empower young people to grow their entrepreneurial ideas, hone their work skills, manage their earnings, and secure better lives for themselves, their families, and their communities.

With more than 100 member countries, the JA Worldwide network is powered by over 470,000 volunteers and mentors, who serve more than 10 million young people around the world each year.

Junior Achievement programs were first introduced in sub-Saharan Africa in 1979, and now JA has operations in 14 African nations reaching more than 200,000 youth annually.

Inspire and prepare young people in Africa to succeed in a global economy.

Foster social mobility and financial inclusion among African youth through financial literacy, improved employability and microenterprise creation.

Brief History

Junior Achievement was founded in 1919 by Theodore Vail, president of American Telephone & Telegraph; Horace Moses, president of Strathmore Paper Co.; and Senator Murray Crane of Massachusetts. Its first program, JA Company Program®, was offered to high school students on an after-school basis. Over the last 37 years, JA Africa has expanded its activities and broadened its scope to include in-school and out of school students.

Ms. Jean Chawapiwa, Managing Director and Founder of Win Win Solutions 4 Africa Consultancy, is chairwoman of the JA Africa board of directors. Mrs. Elizabeth Bintliff is the president and chief executive officer of JA Africa. JA Africa board members represent a wide range of businesses and academic institutions around the world.
