JA Ghana Organizes National Company of the Year Competition

On October 6th, JA Ghana will host their National Company of the Year (NCOY) Competition at Alpha Beta High School from 8am to 2pm.

The NCOY is the premier pitch competition for young high school-aged entrepreneurs, bringing together students from three high schools in Accra: Labone Senior High School, Accra Academy and Alpha Beta Christian College, who have completed the JA Company Program®. The Company Program teaches young people how to be entrepreneurs by giving them the opportunity to start and run a business during the course of the academic year. Finalists from participating schools compete to demonstrate their business acumen, creativity and entrepreneurial thinking as they present the ideas, products and companies they have created. They are evaluated by an esteemed panel of judges.

The national winner will then proceed to represent Ghana against other JA Africa member-nation companies. At NCOY, JA student companies present the results of their enterprise with evidence of innovation, financial stewardship, teamwork and corporate social responsibility to a panel of independent judges who have the difficult task of selecting one winner who has successfully combined all of the above and made some profit. JA Ghana students must demonstrate a holistic understanding of the company’s performance as a business and as a corporate citizen, a recognition of challenges and how they overcame them, and an awareness of the need to develop solutions that will impact their generation as future leaders.

The components of the competition include student presentations, submission of financials in an Annual Report and defense against tough questions posed by the judges. Whether or not they win, all participants gain the valuable skill of presenting to potential business funders as well as sharpening their public speaking and critical thinking skills.

The next cycle of the Company Program will be launched at the NCOY which will be funded by Delta Air Lines.
